Bengal Florican

The Bengal Florican, scientifically classified as Houbaropsis bengalensis, is a critically endangered bustard species that evolved within the tall, fire-maintained grasslands of the Terai region in India and Nepal, as well as the floodplain grasslands of Cambodia. Historically, these birds were once widespread across the Himalayan foothills, but their presence has been drastically reduced due to the conversion of these mosaic landscapes into intensive agriculture and the loss of natural flood regimes that once sustained their habitat.

The bird is characterized by a distinctive, broad wing shape and a rounded tail, physical traits that facilitate its low-level display flights and terrestrial lifestyle.
