Black-bellied Hummingbird

The Black-bellied Hummingbird (Eupherusa nigriventris) was formally described in 1867 by the ornithologist George Newbold Lawrence. This species is native to the humid mountain forests of Costa Rica and western Panama, inhabiting the canopy and borders of the highlands. It emerged as a distinct subject of study during a period of intense 19th-century exploration of Neotropical biodiversity, where naturalists sought to catalog the rich avian variety of the Central American isthmus.

The physical design of the species is defined by its striking morphological adaptations, including its pointed wings and distinctively forked tail, which facilitate the rapid, maneuverable flight necessary for its niche as a nectar-feeder. Unlike many hummingbirds that display iridescence across their entire plumage, the male is characterized by its namesake velvet-black belly, a feature that provides a dramatic contrast to its metallic green mantle and white under-tail coverts.
