Coppery-bellied Puffleg

The Coppery-bellied Puffleg is a hummingbird species endemic to the humid forests of the Eastern Andes in Colombia. First described in the mid-19th century, it is part of the specialized Eriocnemis genus, known for the distinctive dense white tufts of downy feathers—often referred to as 'muffs'—that cover the birds' legs. These birds are adapted to high-altitude cloud forests, where their pointed wings and notched tail allow for precise, agile flight while foraging for nectar among local flora.

The species was first documented by naturalists during the era of extensive scientific expeditions into the northern Andes. Its classification and naming were influenced by the bird's unique iridescent plumage and the striking copper-colored patch on its abdomen, which distinguishes it from its close relatives. Like many members of its genus, the Coppery-bellied Puffleg remains a subject of ongoing ornithological interest, primarily due to its localized habitat and the evolutionary pressures of high-elevation Andean ecosystems.
