Black-breasted Munia

The Black-breasted Munia, known scientifically as Lonchura teerinki, is a passerine bird endemic to the Weyland Mountains of western New Guinea. First described by the Dutch ornithologist G.C.A. Junge in 1939, the species evolved in isolation within high-altitude grasslands and swampy clearings. Its distinctive plumage serves as a primary identifier, characterized by the dark throat and breast markings that contrast with its tawny flanks, an evolutionary adaptation suited to its specific montane habitat.

The bird's morphology reflects its specialized ecological niche, featuring a short tail and rounded wings that facilitate agile, short-burst flight within dense vegetation. Ornithological documentation of the species remains relatively specialized, as its remote mountain range habitat has limited the frequency of field observations. Taxonomic studies have often grouped it alongside the closely related Gray-banded Munia, highlighting its significance in understanding the distribution and diversification of the Estrildidae family across the Indonesian archipelago.
