Black-breasted Puffbird

The Black-breasted Puffbird was formally described by the English ornithologist Philip Sclater in 1856. Like other members of the Bucconidae family, it is native to the humid lowland forests of Central and South America, ranging from eastern Panama through western Colombia and into northwestern Ecuador. These birds are characterized by their sedentary, stoic behavior, often remaining motionless on high branches for long periods while waiting for prey, a trait that evolved to help them blend into the canopy.

The species is distinguished by its rounded wings and short tail, anatomical features adapted for short, explosive flights rather than long-distance migration. Taxonomists and illustrators have long highlighted the species' robust bill and distinct black breast band, which serve as its primary visual identifiers. As a subject of scientific illustration, the bird represents the broader fascination with the biodiversity of the Neotropics that spurred extensive European biological expeditions throughout the nineteenth century.
