Black-cheeked Mountain Tanager

The Black-cheeked Mountain Tanager, scientifically known as Anisognathus melanogenys, is an avian species endemic to the Santa Marta Mountains in northern Colombia. It was formally described by the ornithologist Osbert Salvin and Frederick DuCane Godman in the late 19th century. Like other members of the genus Anisognathus, this tanager evolved within the isolated high-altitude cloud forests of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a region known for its high level of biological endemism. Its distinct plumage and physical adaptations, such as its rounded wings and tail, are characteristic of its lifestyle in dense montane foliage.

The taxonomy of this species reflects the broader exploration of the Neotropics during the Victorian era, when naturalists sought to catalog the diverse mountain fauna of South America. The design of the bird—a striking combination of yellow and black coloration—functions as an evolutionary adaptation to the low-light environment of the cloud forest canopy. While not a commercial commodity in the traditional sense, the species remains a significant subject of study for ornithologists interested in the biogeography of the Andean-connected mountain ranges.
