Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager

The black-cheeked ant-tanager (Driophlox atrimaxillaris) is a bird species endemic to the humid lowland forests of the Osa Peninsula in southwestern Costa Rica. Formally described by ornithologist George Kruck Cherrie in 1893, the species represents a distinct lineage within the tanager family. Its existence is tied to the unique microclimates of the Golfo Dulce region, where it occupies a highly localized range that makes it a subject of significant interest for conservation biologists.

The bird is characterized by its plumage, which features a distinctive black mask, and its morphology, specifically its rounded wings and tail, which are adaptations for maneuvering through dense forest undergrowth.
