Black-faced Apalis

The Black-faced Apalis, scientifically known as Apalis personata, is a passerine bird belonging to the Cisticolidae family. It is native to the montane forests of the Albertine Rift in Central Africa, specifically inhabiting regions across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda. Within the context of ornithological history, the species was first formally described by William Lutley Sclater in 1930, reflecting the intense period of European biological classification and exploration of African biodiversity during the early 20th century.

The bird is characterized by its distinct black face mask, which contrasts sharply with its olive-green plumage, a design adaptation for life within the dense canopy of cloud forests. Ornithologists often note its vocal nature, a common trait in the Apalis genus that aids in identifying these birds within their often-misty, high-altitude habitats.
