Black-headed Grosbeak

The Black-headed Grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) was formally described by ornithologist William Swainson in 1827. Part of the cardinal family, this species evolved to thrive in the deciduous and mixed forests of western North America, migrating annually between their breeding grounds in the United States and Canada and their wintering habitats in Mexico. The bird is biologically noted for its robust, triangular bill, an adaptation that allows it to crack open hard seeds and prey upon insects that other songbirds often bypass.
