Varied Bunting

The Varied Bunting (Passerina versicolor) is a member of the Cardinalidae family, primarily inhabiting the brushy canyons and arid scrublands of the southwestern United States and Mexico. Evolutionary biologists categorize the species within the Passerina genus, which is characterized by the complex, vibrant plumage patterns found in males, an adaptation largely driven by sexual selection within their territorial breeding grounds.

The species was formally described by William Swainson in 1827. Ornithological documentation from the mid-19th century notes the bird's distinct coloration—a mix of deep purples, reds, and blues—which ornithologists and naturalists of the period found particularly striking compared to other North American finches.
