Black-hooded Coucal

The Black-hooded Coucal, scientifically classified as Centropus steerii, is an endemic species native to the Philippines, specifically documented on the island of Mindoro. It was first described in the late 19th century by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe, named in honor of Joseph Beal Steere, who collected the type specimen during his expedition to the Philippines. As a member of the cuckoo family, its evolution has resulted in the broad wing shape and distinctively long tail that characterize its movement through dense lowland forests and bamboo thickets.

The species is currently recognized by ornithologists and conservationists as critically endangered due to the severe fragmentation and loss of its natural habitat. Its biology remains a subject of study, focusing on how its specific morphology, including its heavy bill and tail-driven flight, allows it to navigate the undergrowth of the Mindoro lowlands.
