Black-necked Stilt

The Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) is a shorebird native to the wetlands of the Americas, ranging from the United States down through South America. Its distinct appearance, characterized by extremely long, slender pink legs and a stark black-and-white plumage, evolved as an adaptation for foraging in shallow aquatic environments. Ornithologically, it belongs to the Recurvirostridae family, a group recognized for these specialized features that allow them to wade in water depths inaccessible to many other shorebirds.
