Black-sided Flowerpecker

The Black-sided Flowerpecker, Dicaeum monticolum, is a species endemic to the mountains of Borneo. First described by Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1887, it belongs to the Dicaeidae family, a group of small passerine birds known for their specialized role in pollination and seed dispersal. Its evolution is closely tied to the montane forests of the island, where it occupies a niche primarily above 1,000 meters in elevation.

The bird’s physical characteristics, including its rounded wings and slightly notched tail, are functional adaptations to the dense, high-altitude forest canopy. Ornithologists often note its distinct plumage—specifically the dark lateral streaks that give the species its common name—as a key feature for field identification. While its habitat remains relatively stable, the species is regarded as a hallmark of Borneo’s high-altitude biodiversity and remains a significant subject for researchers studying avian adaptation in tropical island ecosystems.
