Golden-rumped Flowerpecker

The Golden-rumped Flowerpecker (Dicaeum annae) is a species of bird in the Dicaeidae family, endemic to a restricted range in Indonesia, primarily found on the islands of Lombok and Sumbawa. It was formally described by the ornithologist Henri Oustalet in 1888, during a period of intense European exploration into the biological diversity of the Malay Archipelago. The bird is named in honor of Anna Oustalet, reflecting the common nineteenth-century taxonomic practice of dedicating discoveries to family members or patrons.

The species is characterized by its distinctively rounded wings and a short, pointed tail, evolutionary adaptations that facilitate its specialized movement within the forest canopy. Its design—if one views its biology through an aesthetic lens—centers on a subtle coloration that allows it to blend into the lush, shaded environments of tropical woodlands. While the bird is not a subject of human design in the traditional sense, its classification remains a significant record of the Wallacea region’s unique evolutionary history, and it is currently regarded as a species of least concern, though it remains sensitive to habitat fragmentation.
