Black-throated Bobwhite

The Black-throated Bobwhite, Colinus nigrogularis, was formally described by the ornithologist John Gould in 1843. Native to the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, and parts of Central America, this species inhabits scrublands and open pine forests. It is distinguished from other members of the Odontophoridae family by the striking black throat and mask of the male, which contrast sharply against a white brow and cinnamon-colored underparts.

The bird's morphology, including its characteristic rounded wings and short tail, is an adaptation suited for its terrestrial lifestyle. These physical traits were studied extensively by mid-19th-century naturalists who sought to classify the diverse fauna of the Neotropics. While not as widely illustrated in Victorian natural history prints as its northern cousin, the Northern Bobwhite, the species remains a notable subject in regional ornithological surveys for its specific vocalizations and distinct plumage patterns.
