Blue-collared Parrot

The blue-collared parrot, scientifically known as Geoffroyus simplex, is a psittacine bird native to the island of New Guinea. It occupies the montane forests of the region, typically dwelling at elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters. The species was formally described by the German ornithologist Adolf Bernhard Meyer in 1891, based on specimens collected during his explorations of the Vogelkop Peninsula. Its naming reflects the distinctive, though often subtle, coloration patterns that differentiate it from its closest relatives within the genus.

The physical design of this parrot, characterized by its broad wings and pointed tail, is an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through dense forest canopies. Unlike many of its more brightly colored tropical counterparts, the blue-collared parrot exhibits a relatively modest plumage, which serves as natural camouflage among the foliage. It remains a subject of study for ornithologists interested in the divergence of New Guinean parrot populations, as it lacks the conspicuous neck collars often found in related species, rendering its common name somewhat ironic in a field-identification context.
