Blue-headed Hummingbird

The Blue-headed Hummingbird, Riccordia bicolor, is a species endemic to the Lesser Antilles, specifically restricted to the islands of Dominica, Martinique, and Guadeloupe. It was first formally described by the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Audebert and the ornithologist Louis Pierre Vieillot in their early nineteenth-century work on hummingbirds. As a species, it reflects the biodiversity of the Caribbean volcanic islands, having evolved in relative isolation to occupy the lush, humid montane forests of its limited range.

The bird is distinguished by its unique coloration, characterized by a vibrant blue crown that contrasts with its metallic green plumage. Its physiological design, including the notably pointed wings and forked tail, represents a specialized evolutionary adaptation for high-speed, maneuverable flight within dense tropical vegetation. While historical ornithological illustrations from the nineteenth century sought to capture these iridescent features through hand-colored engravings, modern scientific understanding emphasizes its role as a key pollinator within its fragile island ecosystem.
