Blue-mantled Thornbill

The Blue-mantled Thornbill, Chalcostigma stanleyi, is a high-altitude hummingbird native to the northern Andes, primarily found in the paramo ecosystems of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. It was first described by the French naturalist Jules Bourcier in 1851, who named it in honor of the Earl of Derby, Edward Smith-Stanley, a prominent patron of ornithology at the time. The species evolved to thrive in extreme, windswept environments, utilizing its pointed wings and specialized bill to forage on small, hardy alpine flowers.

The bird's distinct aesthetic—characterized by its deep bronze-green mantle and notched tail—reflects an evolutionary adaptation to life at high elevations, typically between 3,000 and 4,000 meters. The genus name Chalcostigma derives from the Greek for bronze and spot, highlighting the subtle, metallic iridescence that serves as a diagnostic feature for taxonomists. Within the scientific community, it remains a focal point for studies on avian adaptation to cold, oxygen-poor climates in the neotropical region.
