Boat-billed Flycatcher

The Boat-billed Flycatcher (Megarynchus pitangua) is a passerine bird belonging to the tyrant flycatcher family, Tyrannidae. It is the sole member of its genus, characterized by its substantial, broad bill which distinguishes it from similar-looking species like the Great Kiskadee. It is widely distributed across the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, ranging from southern Mexico through Central America and into much of South America, typically inhabiting forest edges, clearings, and gallery forests.

Evolutionarily, the species evolved to occupy a specific ecological niche that favors its heavy, flattened bill, which is adapted for manipulating a diverse diet of large insects and small fruits. Ornithological documentation of the species began during the late 18th and early 19th centuries as naturalists cataloged the avian diversity of the Neotropics.
