Boat-tailed Grackle

The Boat-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus major) is a permanent resident of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. Its evolutionary history is tied to the specialized coastal marsh environments where it feeds, developing a unique silhouette characterized by its elongated, V-shaped tail—a feature from which it derives its common name. The species was first formally described by Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in 1819, based on observations of the distinct populations inhabiting the coastal regions of the southeastern United States.

The design of the bird’s anatomy, particularly its broad wings and pointed, keeled tail, serves a highly specific functional role in its courtship and flight mechanics. During the breeding season, the male’s iridescent plumage and elaborate display rituals are central to its social structure within the dense, salt-marsh vegetation it calls home.
