Boulton's Batis

Boulton's Batis, scientifically known as Batis margaritae, was formally described by the ornithologist W. Wedgwood Bowen in 1933. The species was named in honor of Laura Boulton, an American ethnomusicologist and explorer who collected the type specimen during an expedition to the highlands of central Angola. The bird emerged from an era of intensive biological surveying in sub-Saharan Africa, where researchers sought to document the isolated avifauna of the region's montane forest fragments.

The physical design of the Batis reflects its adaptation to dense, wooded habitats, characterized by its distinctive rounded wings and a slightly notched tail. These features are typical of the Batis genus, which relies on short, burst-flight maneuvers to hunt insects within the forest understory. While the species is not a subject of artistic illustration in the commercial sense, it serves as a critical indicator species for the ecological health of the Afromontane forests it occupies.
