Bourke's Parrot

The Bourke's parrot was first described by Major-General Sir Thomas Brisbane in 1841 and named in honor of Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Bourke, the Governor of New South Wales. Indigenous to the arid interior of Australia, these small birds were historically elusive due to their crepuscular nature, favoring the dawn and dusk hours to feed in the scrublands. Their arrival in the international pet trade during the mid-20th century transformed them from obscure wild subjects into cherished aviary companions, valued particularly for their calm temperament and subtle, rose-tinted plumage.

Unlike many vibrant, high-energy parrots, the Bourke’s parrot was specifically noted by aviculturists for its gentle, non-destructive behavior and quiet vocalizations. Their design—a modest, dusty pink and brown coloration—serves as essential camouflage against the red soils of the Australian outback. While they were initially difficult to breed in captivity, successful captive populations eventually solidified their status as a staple for bird enthusiasts, appreciated for their graceful, rounded wing shape and distinctively notched tails during flight.
