Brandt's Cormorant

Brandt's Cormorant (Urile penicillatus) is a marine bird native to the Pacific coast of North America, ranging from Alaska to the Gulf of California. Named for the German naturalist Johann Friedrich von Brandt, who served as the director of the Zoological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the species was formally described in the 19th century during an era of intensive exploration of the North American coastline. The bird is biologically adapted to its environment, characterized by its broad wings used for pursuit-diving and a pointed tail that assists in underwater maneuverability.

The species is distinguished by its social nesting habits, often forming large, dense colonies on offshore rocks and islands.
