Brassy-breasted Tanager

The Brassy-breasted Tanager, Tangara desmaresti, is a small passerine bird endemic to the coastal mountains of northern Venezuela. It was formally described by the French naturalist René Lesson in 1832, named in honor of the French zoologist Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest. As a member of the diverse Thraupidae family, the bird occupies high-altitude cloud forests, relying on the specific microclimates of the Cordillera de la Costa to thrive.

The bird is characterized by its distinct, rounded wing and tail morphology, which reflects its specialized flight patterns within dense forest understories. Ornithologists often note the species for its brilliant brassy-gold breast plumage contrasted against a darker, velvety face mask. While not a subject of human design in an industrial sense, the species has been a consistent subject of taxonomic study and avian illustration since the nineteenth century, valued by naturalists for its vivid coloration and evolutionary adaptation to the Neotropical montane environment.
