Braun's Bushshrike

Braun's Bushshrike, scientifically known as Laniarius brauni, was first identified by David Armitage Bannerman in 1939. It is a passerine bird endemic to a highly restricted range in the escarpment forests of Kwanza Sul in Angola. Named in honor of the German ornithologist Robert Braun, who collected the type specimen, the species exists within the Malaconotidae family. Its discovery helped clarify the complex biogeography of the Angolan highlands, a region known for high levels of avian endemism.

The physical morphology of the species is defined by its rounded wings and a distinctively notched tail, traits that reflect its evolutionary adaptation to dense, understory forest habitats. Due to the limited distribution and the environmental pressures facing the Angolan Afromontane forests, the bird has been a subject of significant interest for ornithologists and conservationists concerned with habitat loss. The bird remains a symbol of the unique biodiversity found within its specific ecological niche.
