Broad-billed Warbler

The Broad-billed Warbler, Tickellia hodgsoni, was first described by the British naturalist Edward Blyth in 1844 and named in honor of Brian Houghton Hodgson, a prominent polymath who served as a British Resident in Nepal. It occupies a distinct place in ornithological taxonomy as the sole member of its genus, characterized by its subtle, olive-brown plumage and a relatively broad, flattened bill adapted for gleaning small insects from the foliage of dense, high-altitude forests.

This species is primarily found in the foothills of the Himalayas, ranging across parts of Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, and southern China. Its design, if viewed through an evolutionary lens, represents a specialized adaptation to the humid, shrubby undergrowth of montane environments. Because of its elusive nature and preference for thick cover, it remains a challenging subject for field researchers, reflecting a history of discovery rooted in 19th-century colonial exploration of the Himalayan biodiversity hotspots.
