Brown-hooded Gull

The Brown-hooded Gull, scientifically known as Chroicocephalus maculipennis, is a species native to southern South America, particularly common in Argentina, Chile, and the Falkland Islands. It is defined by the distinctive chocolate-brown hood that appears during the breeding season, transitioning to a white head with dark ear spots in the winter. Its evolution has equipped it with broad wings and a subtly forked tail, adaptations that allow for agile, opportunistic foraging along coastal and inland wetlands.

This species belongs to the diverse Chroicocephalus genus, characterized by small to medium-sized gulls that often inhabit freshwater environments as much as saltwater. Ornithologists emphasize its role in its ecosystem as a highly social bird, frequently seen in large, noisy colonies.
