Kerguelen Tern

The Kerguelen Tern, or Sterna virgata, is a specialized seabird endemic to the subantarctic islands of the southern Indian Ocean, primarily nesting on the Kerguelen, Crozet, and Prince Edward archipelagos. Its evolutionary lineage is closely tied to the harsh, wind-swept environments of these remote volcanic islands, where it evolved to survive in extreme maritime conditions. The species was formally described by the German naturalist Jean Cabanis in 1875, who identified its distinct anatomical markers—namely its sharp, pointed wings and deeply forked tail—that allow it to navigate the high-velocity winds characteristic of the Southern Ocean.

The bird's design reflects a classic adaptation to a highly specific ecological niche, emphasizing efficiency in flight and maneuverability over long-distance migration.
