Brush Bronzewing

The Brush Bronzewing, scientifically classified as Phaps elegans, is a ground-dwelling pigeon native to southern and coastal Australia. The species was formally described by the naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1810, emerging during a period of intense European biological classification of the Australian continent. It belongs to a genus of bronzewings defined by the metallic, iridescent patches on their secondary wing feathers, an evolutionary adaptation that helps these birds camouflage within the dappled light of the dense heaths and scrublands they inhabit.
