California Gull

The California Gull was formally described by the ornithologist George N. Lawrence in 1854. This species holds a unique place in American cultural history due to its association with the 'Miracle of the Gulls' in 1848, when a flock of these birds allegedly descended on Mormon pioneers in Salt Lake Valley to consume a plague of Mormon crickets that threatened the settlers' crops. This event led to the bird being designated as the state bird of Utah in 1955, serving as a rare example of a wild animal being legally memorialized for its perceived service to human agriculture.

The physical design of the California Gull is a masterclass in functional avian evolution, characterized by its pointed wing shape and square tail, which allow for efficient long-distance flight and maneuverability. Ornithologists often note the subtle yellow bill with its distinctive black and red subterminal spots, a feature that distinguishes it from similar gull species.
