Cape Verde Sparrow

The Cape Verde sparrow, or Passer iagoensis, is an endemic passerine bird restricted to the islands of the Cape Verde archipelago off the coast of West Africa. First described by the naturalist John Gould in 1837, the species is closely related to the widespread house sparrow but evolved in isolation, leading to its distinct morphology. Its evolutionary history is a subject of ongoing study, as it serves as a primary example of island speciation within the Passeridae family, having adapted to the arid and rugged landscapes of the islands.

Physically, the species is defined by its compact, rounded wings and a characteristically notched tail, features that have historically allowed researchers to distinguish it from other sparrows in the region. The bird’s coloration—typically a blend of brown and grey—functions as effective camouflage against the volcanic rock of its habitat.
