Cape Verde Storm-Petrel

The Cape Verde storm-petrel, scientifically classified as Hydrobates jabejabe, is a small seabird endemic to the Cape Verde archipelago in the North Atlantic. Evolutionarily distinct from its close relative, the band-rumped storm-petrel, this species was shaped by the isolated maritime environment of the Macaronesian islands. It has long been recognized by naturalists for its specialized adaptation to the open ocean, characterized by its pointed wings and distinctively forked tail, which facilitate a characteristic erratic, fluttering flight pattern over turbulent waters.

First formally described and differentiated through ongoing ornithological study, the species remains a subject of intense scientific interest regarding its breeding ecology and population trends. Because these birds spend the vast majority of their lives at sea and only return to remote, rocky islets under the cover of darkness to nest, they have historically been difficult to document.
