Cerulean Flycatcher

The Cerulean Flycatcher, scientifically classified as Eutrichomyias rowleyi, is an exceptionally rare avian species endemic to the Sangihe Islands of Indonesia. First described by Adolph Bernhard Meyer and Lionel William Wiglesworth in 1894, the species was historically noted for its distinctive powder-blue plumage, pointed wings, and notched tail. For much of the twentieth century, the bird was considered elusive or possibly extinct, reflecting the fragile ecological state of its restricted island habitat.

The species' design is a remarkable example of evolutionary specialization within an isolated island environment. Its morphological features, specifically the pointed wings that facilitate swift aerial maneuvers and the notched tail that provides stability during flight, are finely tuned for catching insects in dense, high-canopy tropical forests. The bird gained renewed international attention following its rediscovery in 1998, which sparked significant conservation efforts aimed at preserving the few remaining hectares of primary forest necessary for its survival.
