Cherry-throated Tanager

The Cherry-throated Tanager (Nemosia rourei) was first described by Jean Théodore Delacour and Pierre Louis Pichot in 1870, based on specimens collected in the forests of Espírito Santo, Brazil. For decades, the species was considered a mystery, as it vanished from scientific observation for nearly 70 years following its initial discovery. It was not until 1998 that the species was rediscovered, confirming its status as one of the rarest and most elusive birds in the Atlantic Forest, a region significantly fragmented by human activity.

The bird is characterized by its distinct, rounded wing and tail shapes, which are physical adaptations suited for maneuverability within the dense, mid-story canopy of its habitat. Ornithologists and conservationists have focused their research on its morphology and specific nesting behaviors to better understand its evolutionary lineage within the tanager family. Given its small, fragmented population and the vulnerability of its habitat, it remains a focal point for international conservation efforts aimed at preserving the biodiversity of the Brazilian highlands.
