Buff-bellied Tanager

The Buff-bellied Tanager, or Thlypopsis inornata, is a species native to the arid inter-Andean valleys of Peru. It was formally described by the German ornithologist Hans von Berlepsch in 1907. As a member of the Thraupidae family, this bird is characterized by its inconspicuous, plain plumage—a trait reflected in its specific epithet, inornata, which translates to unadorned. It typically inhabits scrubby, dry environments, which dictates its evolutionary adaptation of rounded wings and a rounded tail, features optimized for agile, short-distance maneuvering through dense undergrowth rather than sustained long-distance migration.

The taxonomy of this bird reflects the late 19th and early 20th-century trend of systematic cataloging of Neotropical avian diversity.
