Chestnut-breasted Munia

The Chestnut-breasted munia, scientifically classified as Lonchura castaneothorax, is a small estrildid finch native to the wetlands, grasslands, and mangroves of northern and eastern Australia, as well as parts of New Guinea. In the context of aviculture, it gained prominence in the 19th and early 20th centuries as European collectors sought out exotic finches for private aviaries. Its popularity was driven by its distinct chestnut breast band and striking, contrasting plumage, which made it a favored subject for ornithological illustrators documenting the biodiversity of the Australasian region.
