Double-barred Finch

The double-barred finch, Stizoptera bichenovii, was formally described by the naturalist Nicholas Aylward Vigors and Thomas Horsfield in 1827. Native to the dry forests and grasslands of northern and eastern Australia, the species is named in honor of James Ebenezer Bicheno, a British colonial secretary and botanist. Its distinct aesthetic, characterized by two black bands across the face and chest, has made it a subject of interest in ornithological studies regarding avian camouflage and social signaling.

Within the context of aviculture, the species is prized for its resilient nature and social disposition. Breeders have long admired its unique pattern, which serves as a biological hallmark in the grassfinch family.
