Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch

The Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch, scientifically classified as Carpodacus davidianus, was formally described by Milne-Edwards in 1865. Native to the mountainous regions of central and southern China, this species evolved to thrive in high-altitude coniferous forests and scrublands. It is characterized by its distinctive rounded wings and notched tail, traits that reflect its adaptation to the rugged, often forested terrain of its habitat.

The species was historically categorized as a subspecies of the Common Rosefinch, but taxonomic advancements have since elevated it to a full species based on distinct plumage patterns and vocalization. Its name reflects both its visual appeal and the 19th-century tradition of European naturalists naming discoveries after their peers or explorers, in this case, Père Armand David, who provided the specimens that defined the species for Western ornithology.
