Cinnamon-tailed Sparrow

The Cinnamon-tailed Sparrow, scientifically classified as Peucaea sumichrasti, is an avian species endemic to a restricted range along the Pacific slope of southern Mexico. First described by George Newbold Lawrence in 1871, the species reflects the taxonomical exploration of the Oaxacan lowlands during the late nineteenth century. It is a member of the family Passerellidae, characterized by its specialized adaptation to the arid tropical deciduous forests and scrubland of the Tehuantepec region.

The physical design of the species is defined by its distinctive rounded wings and a subtly notched tail, anatomical features that facilitate the sparrow's movement through dense, thorny understory environments. Ornithological interest in the sparrow has historically focused on its isolated distribution, as it serves as a primary example of the unique biodiversity found within the dry forests of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Conservation efforts remain focused on habitat preservation, as its limited geographic range makes the species particularly sensitive to regional ecological changes.
