Collared Crescentchest

The Collared Crescentchest, scientifically known as Melanopareia torquata, is a terrestrial bird native to the central South American cerrado and open woodland habitats. Taxonomic classification of the species has historically been complex, as the crescentchests were long associated with tapaculos before being placed into their own distinct family, Melanopareiidae, based on significant morphological and genetic divergence. Its evolution is tied to the unique ecological niche of the cerrado, where its ground-dwelling nature and preference for grassy savannas have shaped its physical characteristics.
