Colombian Grebe

The Colombian Grebe, scientifically known as Podiceps andinus, was a flightless waterbird endemic to the high-altitude wetlands of the Eastern Andes in Colombia. First formally described in the early 20th century, the species evolved in the isolated environment of the Bogotá savanna, particularly around Lake Tota and Lake Fuquene. Its physical characteristics, including its distinctively pointed wings and notched tail, were adaptations to a highly specialized lacustrine lifestyle that ultimately left the population vulnerable to environmental shifts.

The decline and eventual extinction of the species are largely attributed to the drainage of wetlands for agriculture and the introduction of predatory fish species into their native lakes. By the mid-20th century, ornithologists noted a rapid population collapse as their habitat was systematically destroyed. Despite late efforts to document the remaining birds, the last confirmed sighting occurred in 1977, leading to its formal classification as extinct. It remains a poignant subject in avian studies, representing the fragility of specialized ecosystems.
