Colombian Chachalaca

The Colombian chachalaca, Ortalis columbiana, is an arboreal bird endemic to the dry forests and scrublands of the Magdalena and Cauca river valleys in Colombia. Evolutionarily categorized within the Cracidae family, these birds are characterized by their rounded wings and long, rounded tails, which aid in their maneuverability through dense canopy vegetation. They play a significant role in their native ecosystems as seed dispersers, occupying a distinct ecological niche in the transitional landscapes of the Andean foothills.

First formally described by the ornithologist Alexander Wetmore in the mid-20th century, the species was historically considered a subspecies of the rufous-vented chachalaca before being elevated to full species status based on vocalization and plumage differences.
