Common Buzzard

The Common Buzzard, Buteo buteo, is a medium-sized bird of prey distributed across most of Europe and parts of Asia. Evolutionarily, its broad wings and rounded tail are distinct adaptations for thermal soaring, allowing it to conserve energy while surveying open landscapes for small mammals, reptiles, and carrion. It has long been a fixture of the European countryside, traditionally depicted in classical ornithological texts as a versatile and resilient raptor.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the species became a subject of intense scientific observation by naturalists who sought to classify the Buteo genus. Its design—characterized by a compact, robust frame and mottled brown plumage—was praised by avian illustrators for its utility in camouflage. While historically maligned by gamekeepers, the species eventually received widespread conservation status in the mid-20th century, cementing its position as a protected and symbolic element of the Palearctic ecosystem.
