Coopmans's Elaenia

Coopmans's Elaenia, scientifically classified as Elaenia brachyptera, was formally described by ornithologists to distinguish it from the closely related Lesser Elaenia. It is a small tyrant flycatcher native to the Neotropics, specifically inhabiting the humid forests and shrubby clearings of western Ecuador and northwestern Peru. Its classification emerged from ongoing taxonomic revisions in the Elaenia genus, where subtle vocal differences and morphometric data, such as its distinctive broad wings and rounded tail, were used to identify it as a separate biological entity.

The bird was named in honor of Peter Coopmans, a renowned ornithologist who made significant contributions to the understanding of Neotropical bird vocalizations. The species is characterized by its inconspicuous behavior and drab plumage, which reflects an evolutionary adaptation for blending into dense canopy foliage. While not a subject of artistic design, the bird represents a specific evolutionary design shaped by the ecological pressures of the Tumbesian dry forests and adjacent humid zones, where its morphology supports the agile, short-burst flight patterns required to forage for insects and small fruits.
