Copper Pheasant

The Copper Pheasant, or Syrmaticus soemmerringii, is a game bird endemic to the Japanese archipelago. Its distinct aesthetic, characterized by a long, graduated tail and rounded wings, has long made it a subject of fascination in East Asian art and ornithological study. The bird is named after the German anatomist Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring, who was instrumental in its scientific description during the 19th century, marking a period when European naturalists were intensely cataloging the biodiversity of the Meiji-era landscape.

Designers and illustrators of the 19th and early 20th centuries often depicted the Copper Pheasant to highlight its unique metallic, iridescent plumage.
