Coral-billed Ground-Cuckoo

The Coral-billed Ground-Cuckoo, scientifically known as Carpococcyx renauldi, is a terrestrial member of the cuckoo family native to the forests of Indochina. Identified by naturalists in the late 19th century, the species is named in honor of the French physician and naturalist Alexandre Renauld. Evolutionarily, its physical characteristics—specifically its rounded wings and exceptionally long, robust tail—are specialized adaptations for a life spent primarily on the forest floor, allowing for agility in dense undergrowth rather than sustained flight.

The species is distinguished by its vibrant, coral-colored bill and orbital skin, which contrast sharply against its grey plumage. Unlike many of its cuckoo relatives that are brood parasites, the Coral-billed Ground-Cuckoo is a distinct and sedentary inhabitant of its ecosystem.
