Malagasy Coucal

The Malagasy coucal, scientifically known as Centropus toulou, is an endemic resident of Madagascar and the Amirante Islands. Evolutionarily, it belongs to the cuckoo family, Cuculidae, though it is distinct from many of its relatives in that it is not a brood parasite, instead building its own nests and raising its young in dense vegetation. Its physical design is well-adapted for its habitat, featuring a notably long tail and broad, rounded wings that allow for agile, short-distance flights through tangled undergrowth.

First described in the late 18th century, the species reflects the unique biodiversity resulting from Madagascar's long period of geographic isolation. Ornithologists and illustrators studying the bird have consistently highlighted its striking seasonal plumage; during the breeding phase, the adult male undergoes a dramatic transformation into a near-complete black coat, a design adaptation thought to play a role in courtship signaling.
