Crescent-faced Antpitta

The Crescent-faced Antpitta, Grallaricula lineifrons, is a rare and elusive passerine bird found primarily in the high-altitude cloud forests of the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador. First described by ornithologist Frank Chapman in 1924, this species is defined by its distinctive crescent-shaped markings on the face and its preference for dense, bamboo-dominated undergrowth. Its biological history is marked by its extreme difficulty of observation, leading to a long period where the species was known almost exclusively from specimen records rather than field sightings.

The bird's physical design is an evolutionary response to its habitat, featuring a rounded wing shape and a short, rounded tail that assist in maneuvering through thick, tangled vegetation.
