Crested Satinbird

The Crested Satinbird, or Cnemophilus macgregorii, is an avian species native to the high-altitude montane forests of New Guinea. Its classification and study date back to the late 19th century, with the species named in honor of Sir William MacGregor, a colonial administrator and naturalist who contributed significantly to the exploration of the region's fauna. These birds are part of the family Cnemophilidae, a distinct group of satinbirds noted for their evolutionary isolation from the bowerbirds with which they were previously conflated.

The bird's morphology, characterized by its rounded wing and tail shapes, is an adaptation to its dense, closed-canopy forest environment, which favors maneuverability over long-distance soaring.
