Where it came from

The Crimson-fronted Cardinal (Paroaria baeri) is a passerine bird native to the Araguaia River basin in central Brazil. First described in 1907 by the ornithologist Hellmayr, it was named in honor of the French naturalist Gustave Adolphe Baer, who collected the type specimen. Its discovery occurred during a period of intense exploration of the South American interior, where researchers sought to document the distinct avian biodiversity of isolated riverine ecosystems.

The species is characterized by its distinctively crimson head contrasting against a gray back and white underparts, a plumage pattern typical of the genus Paroaria. Its physical structure, featuring rounded wings and a notched tail, reflects its adaptation to the scrubby, river-bordering habitats of the Cerrado biome. While it shares a general morphology with its more common relative, the Red-crested Cardinal, the Crimson-fronted Cardinal remains scientifically notable for its restricted geographical range and specific habitat requirements.
